Hanover Township Shade Tree Commission Meeting

July 15, 2002

The monthly meeting of the Shade Tree Commission was held at the Hanover Township Municipal Building, 3630 Jacksonville Road, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18017 at 6:30 P.M.

In attendance were Joan Witiak, Jeff Waldron, David Zakeski, and Daniel Roman.

1. Upon motion of Daniel Roman, seconded by Jeff Waldron, the Commission approved the minutes from the meeting of the Shade Tree Commission dated June 10, 2002.

2. Review tree list: A preliminary list was prepared and distributed by Joan Witiak. It was reviewed and some additions and deletions were made.

3. Discuss permits: The Township solicitor has sent letters to the three residents who have not responded to permit notices.

Several properties have trees that have died recently. Permit notices will be sent.

4. Review:

Faulkner Subaru: The plan would remove a buffer with large trees. We recommend redoing the plan to save these trees.

Weichert Realtors: The six replacement trees are not approved varieties; other trees from our list should be selected. The healthy 36-inch oak tree scheduled to be removed should be saved by adjusting the plan.

Hanover Glen: Twenty or so trees scheduled to be removed from the southeast corner of the property should be replaced, according to our Ordinance. No replacement trees are shown on the plan.

5. Discuss pruning: Dan Roman contacted a landscaper/arborist who provided him with the ANSI standards of pruning. We have a limited budget but will try to get some of the young park trees pruned later this year. Without pruning, we will lose some of them as they get older.

6. New business: The Recreational Advisory Board asked for our opinion regarding the type of evergreen tree to plant by the pool. Both the Norway spruce and the Colorado spruce are good choices.

Discussed fall planting project for Stokes Park Rd. area. There is a problem with a large drainage swale where some plantings were planned. Dan Roman will discuss this with Jim Sterner. There are varieties of trees that do well in a wetter environment.

The Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Co. was enlisted to help water the newly planted park trees to give them a better chance of survival during this severe dry spell. We are grateful for their help.

The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

David Zakeski
