HANOVER TOWNSHIP SHADE TREE ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING

June 1, 2004

The monthly meeting of the Shade Tree Advisory Commission was held at 6:30 p.m. at the Hanover Township Municipal Building, 3630 Jacksonville Road, Bethlehem PA   18017.

In attendance were Joan Witiak, Dan Roman, David Zakeski, Linda Taylor, Susan Scholl, and Frank Colon.

1.  Upon the motion of Dan Roman, seconded by Linda Taylor, the commission approved the minutes from the meeting of the STAC dated April 26, 2004.

2.  Discuss Permits:

A request was received to remove protected trees in the Villani development.  A plan showing the existing trees and those proposed to be removed must be submitted and reviewed before a permit can be issued.

Several residents submitted permit requests to remove and replace street trees.  Each case is handled on an individual basis, taking into consideration the type of tree and its placement.

David Zakeski will check on the replacement trees on the Hanoverville Rd. berm.

It was agreed that 19 replacement trees should be planted along Bridle Path Rd.  Hanover Engineering will be consulted on the distance they should be placed from the center line of the road.

3.  Tree Removals:

A huge hackberry on Jacksonville Rd. was removed illegally without permission or a permit.  The resident will be required to replace it with two trees instead of one.  Unfortunately, this specimen tree cannot be replaced.

4.  Park Tree Planting:

Before the meeting tonight, Westgate Park trees were reviewed for replacements.  On June 3, 2004, Pointe North Park will be reviewed for additions and replacement trees.  Several oak trees planted this spring are leaning.  A letter will be sent to the Patriot Bank landscaper.  Bids for a late fall planting should be sent out in September.

5.      Water Bids:

Dan Roman will send out bids to firms interested in watering the new park trees in case of   drought conditions this summer.

6.      Review LVCC Phase II, Lot 4:  Comments made with regard to the variety of trees used.

Review Faulkner Subaru:  Comments made with regard to the variety of trees used, replacement trees should be deciduous, no tree protection fence shown.

Review Valley View Estates:  Comments made with regard to the variety and placement of street trees, no replacement trees listed, 4 trees to be removed should be saved

Review Hindu Temple Society:  Could not decipher the landscape plan;  comment made on variety of replacement trees and the lack of trees around the parking area.

Review Bennigan’s replacement trees:  The red maple has been planted in front of the Community Center.  We are still waiting for the 2 European purple beech trees for the municipal tract.

7.      New Business:

The meeting date for June will be changed to July 5 and  the meeting date for July will be changed to August 2 to coordinate with the Planning Commission meetings.

Linda Taylor will order new Tree Care brochures and permits.

A large tree on the Patriot Bank site was damaged by machinery.  We will require two additional trees to be planted because the ability of this large tree to survive is slim.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Taylor
