Hanover Township Shade Tree Commission Meeting

March 31, 2003

The monthly meeting of the Shade Tree Commission was held at 6:30 p.m. at the Hanover

Township Municipal Building, 3630 Jacksonville Road, Bethlehem PA 18017.

In attendance were: Joan Witiak, Dan Roman, Jeff Waldron, David Zakeski, and Frank Colon.

1. Upon the motion of Joan Witiak, seconded by Jeff Waldron, the commission approved the minutes from the meeting of the Shade Tree Commission dated January 27, 2003.

2. Discuss Permits: Reminder notices will be sent to homeowners whose permit expires this spring and summer. Those permits expiring last fall and winter will be checked. If no tree has been planted, the property will be reported to the township.

3. Discuss Park Tree Planting: Dan Roman met with members of the Recreational Advisory Board and evaluated each park with regard to the number of new trees needed. A list of trees will be sent to the developers of Patriot Bank and Hanover Ridge for fall planting in our parks.

4. Discuss Park Tree Mulching: Jeff Waldron sent cost estimate requests to five companies for mulching 400 park trees. Only two replies were received. Chris’s Lawn Service was the low bidder. We will recommend them for spring mulching.

5. Discuss Bennigan’s Restaurant: New plan is good. We will advise against removing 1/3 of the foliage on planting.

Discuss Jaindl Land Co., Monocacy Farms: No more than 40% of any variety of tree can be planted on one street. Recommend planting the seedless variety of sweet gum trees. Recommend planting trees behind the sidewalks instead of 2 feet 6 inches from the curb—better for road crew and trees.

6. Hanoverview deadline is April 15th. Suggested reminder on the devastating effects of topping. Will try to have illustrating picture. Also reminder of permit and permission to remove trees in right-of-way.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

David Zakeski
