Hanover Township Shade Tree Advisory Commission Meeting
May 19, 2003
The monthly meeting of the Shade Tree Advisory Commission was held at 6:30 p.m. at the Hanover Township Municipal Building, 3630 Jacksonville Road, Bethlehem PA 18017.
In attendance were: Joan Witiak, Dan Roman, Linda Taylor, and John Diacogiannis.
1. Upon the motion of Linda Taylor, seconded by Dan Roman, the commission approved the minutes from the meeting of the Shade Tree Commission dated April 28, 2003.
Courtesy of the floor was extended to two residents who had concerns about pruning a tree on their property with branches overhanging a neighbor’s property. The STAC has no jurisdiction over trees not in the township right-of-way.
2. Discuss replacement for Jeff Waldron: Susan Scholl is willing to serve and.will be proposed to the Supervisors for appointment to the STAC.
3. Discuss permits: Joan sent reminders about permits expiring this summer. Also, permits and letters were sent to people who have removed trees and not secured a permit.
4. Discuss Hanover Ridge: Joan attended the last Supervisor’s meeting and replacement trees vs. money from the developer was discussed. STAC does not feel that the $214 per tree, requested by the Township, will be sufficient to insure quality trees, properly planted. Bids from numerous nurseries from 2000 and 2001 averaged $275/tree. Bid from 2002 was $290/tree. This does not include the cost of watering new trees for the first year.
5. Discuss Park Tree Planting and Mulching: Chris’s Lawn Service has finished mulching 444 trees in the Township parks. Root’s Nursery will not have a list of available 2 - 2 ½ inch trees for fall planting until July. Patriot Bank will donate 65 trees this fall.
6. New Business: It was suggested that a STAC information table be set up for Family Fun day on May 24th. Dan Roman can man the table for some part of the day.
It was suggested that Shade Tree Permits and the Approved Tree list be online. To be discussed further at next meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda K. Taylor
