HANOVER TOWNSHIP SHADE TREE ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING

May 31, 2006

The monthly meeting of the Shade Tree Advisory Commission was held at the Hanover Township Municipal Building, 3630 Jacksonville Rd., Bethlehem, PA 18017, at 6:30 PM.

In attendance were Joan Witiak, Susan Scholl, David Zakeski, and Daniel Roman.

1.      Upon motion of Susan Scholl, seconded by Daniel Roman, the minutes of the March 27, 2006, and April 24, 2006, STAC meetings were approved.

2.      Review Permits:  Susan received several slips stating that trees have been planted.  She will check the other addresses with permits that have expired.  The Township should be handling the lack of response at 4301 Greenfield and 4135 Jacksonville Rd.

3.      Review Mulching:  David met with the representative at Agroscape to locate trees that were missed.  All of the trees have now been mulched.

4.      Trees at Crawford Park Parking Lot:  Joan has tried to locate four trees to plant at the entrance and has had some difficulty finding available trees in a suitable variety.  The trees have been sold and more will not be dug until they are dormant in late fall.  She will try two more nurseries this week.

5.      Review LVCC II, Lots 7 and 8: The advisability of planting Emerald Queen Norway maples next to the buildings was questioned.

Review Faulkner Saab, Cadillac Showroom:  A landscape plan was not provided, so we cannot determine what is planted around the building.  Even though it may not be required, it would be advisable to plant street trees on this property.

Review LVIP IV Lot 45, Minrad:  Evergreen trees cannot be used for replacement of large deciduous trees.  If they are used for general landscaping they do not constitute 200 s.f./tree.  Therefore, the number of replacement trees must be recalculated.  We request trees and not money for the replacement trees.  Also, the dollar per tree offered is not sufficient.

Review LVIA Lot Location Plan:  No comment needed from STAC.

6.      Discuss DBSi Request to Prune Tree: Our first recommendation would be to raise the transmitter on their roof rather than cutting 10 feet off the top of the very large white oak tree in a 20-ft easement not on DBSi’s property.  After a report from a certified arborist, we have agreed to let them prune this tree one time only and not before the end of August, with the written approval of the property owner.  This is a very large oak and is worthy of protection.

7.      Old Business/New Business:

Many trees in Monocacy Farms and along Hanoverville Rd. have died.  They were planted incorrectly.  The burlap was not folded back 1/3 as shown on the plans, and the twine was not cut from around the trunk.  The burlap sticks out of the ground and provides a wick for water to evaporate on hot or windy days.

The southwest corner of Rt. 512 and Crawford Dr. could be upgraded with some tree planting.  Dan will get quotes and discuss the matter with the Township Manager for an improvement next year.

Joan contacted Brickman about watering the 51 newly planted park trees in case of drought conditions this summer.  They need 1 week notice.

Because of the fourth of July holiday and vacations, the next meeting of the STAC will be held on July 17, 2006.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,

Joan Witiak for Linda Taylor
