Hanover Township Shade Tree Commission Meeting

November 19, 2001

The monthly meeting of the Shade Tree Commission was held at the Hanover Township Municipal Building, 3630 Jacksonville Road, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18017 at 6:30 P.M.

In attendance were Joan Witiak, Jeff Waldron, Daniel Roman, and guest David Zakeski. Absent was Susan Gibisser.

1. Upon motion of Jeff Waldron, seconded by Joan Witiak, the Commission approved the agenda.

Upon motion of Jeff Waldron, seconded by Joan Witiak, the Commission approved the minutes from the meeting of the Shade Tree Commission dated October 15, 2001.

2. Placement of new trees:

The locations for the new trees will be initially marked with spray paint. Stakes will be put in a day or so before planting.

3. Discuss spring planting, mulching and pruning:

We are planning for a spring tree planting. Jeff Waldron will prepare a request for bids for spring mulching. Pruning is still an issue. Joan Witiak and Dan Roman pruned trees at the south end of Point North Park last spring. We don't feel this is the kind of project that the Shade Tree Commission should undertake but pruning is necessary for young trees, so they are properly shaped and defects removed. This will prevent damage and/or loss when the trees mature. This spring we will complete the rest of the Point North Park.

4. Review permits:

There are no additional permits to review. Weis Markets replaced some, but not all, of the dead trees, and they blew over in the wind. They were planted improperly and not staked.

5. Review tree list:

The list of recommended shade trees is being updated. It will be complete by the December meeting.

6. New business:

  1. We will have a potential new member attending the December meeting.
  2. Sue Gibisser has notified Joan Witiak that she plans to resign from the Shade Tree Commission.
  3. Dead trees on South Commerce Drive are not being replaced. We will identify the dead trees in the spring and notify LVIP IV.

The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Daniel J. Roman
