HANOVER TOWNSHIP SHADE TREE ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING

October 30, 2006

The monthly meeting of the Shade Tree Advisory Commission was held at the Hanover Township Municipal Building, 3630 Jacksonville Rd., Bethlehem, PA 18017, at 6:30 PM.

In attendance were Joan Witiak, Susan Scholl, David Zakeski, and Daniel Roman.  Guest was Glenn Myster.

1.      Upon motion of Dan Roman, seconded by Susan Scholl, the minutes of the September 25, 2006, STAC meeting were approved.

2.      Review Permits:  Susan Scholl reviewed the new permits submitted and the replacement trees planted.

3.      Park Tree Pruning:  Trees that need to be pruned were identified in Crawford and Troxell Parks.  The Municipal Park will be checked this week, and the trees will be pruned this fall.

4.      Fall Tree Planting Bid:  The bid for the park tree planting was awarded to Roots Nursery.  The trees will be planted in late fall.

5.      Review Traditions of America:  The revised plan is much better.  We recommend a few more varieties of street trees.  Some of the large oaks scheduled to be removed could be saved with careful excavation.

Review 2346 Jacksonville Rd.:  The varieties of replacement trees must be large deciduous.

Review Airport Commons Office Complex, Northgate II Lot 3:  There were several items missing from the plans.  Some tree varieties listed were not acceptable.  The landscape plan was very difficult to read.

6.      Old/New Business:  Enforcement of  tree planting, as listed on the plans, is an issue.  Also, the enforcement of tree protection fence being maintained throughout construction is an issue.  A huge oak tree in a tree line perpendicular to Brodhead Rd. died because of damage and compaction due to a breach of the tree protection fence during construction several years ago.  A notice will be sent to the landowner for replacement.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, November 27, 2006, at 6:30 pm.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:02 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,

Joan Witiak for Linda Taylor
